GWRRA Weekend at the Opry.
Patti and I along with several others Tennessee GWRRA members attended the Weekend at the Opry. This was a first for the National putting something together like this. There were no vendors, seminars, or classes to attend, just a weekend of GWRRA members getting together and socializing. They started out with a opening ceremonies on Friday morning. Due to poor planning on my part we missed this. I had a Doctors appointment early that morning. Dennis and Jan Peterson represented us for that. The had scheduled a dinner boat cruise and a night at the Grand Old Opry. These were extra things that you could sign up for and attend. We felt these were a little pricey but several people attended these events. We sort of did our own thing and went to the mall with some of our friends from Chapter A. Thanks Troy, Vickie, and Sally for showing us around the mall. The event also had a meet and greet set in the afternoon where we could socialize with our fellow GWRRA members. They also had some great door prizes to give away but the way they were drawing from arm band numbers had a hard time finding winners. It seems that everyone was out doing other things. They figured this out and began to give door prize tickets as you entered room. This helped cut down on drawing number after number without getting a winner. Josie Nelson was a big time winner at this. She not only won some great door prizes but got a Directors Award Pin from Ray and Sandi Garris. It was for her jubilant dance she did when she won a door prize. She also won a second place plaque in the dance contest. The event was a low key sort of thing. The dinner and dance on Saturday night was fun. Sort of surprised that we were fed pizza and salad for the dinner. Scoter Davis did a great job with the dance. He punt in several games and contest along with some great dancing music. The only complaint I had about the event was that if you did not do one of the extra events there was no place to hang out and just socialize with your GWRRA friends. The event room was closed except for the meet and greet. We did meet some great people from all across the United States and Canada. The pub crawl was fun. Each pub had some national people stationed in it and they signed our card and when the card was full you dropped it into a box and the card was drawn at closing ceremonies for a nice door prize. They gave away two of the riding jackets. We got to meet the founding members of GWRRA along with the National staff during the pub crawl. One did not have to drink at these places go, just go in, locate the leadership and get your card signed. The closing ceremonies were fun and the group picture taken on the stair case is going to be nice. Look for the Tennessee folks standing up front.
